Created in 1970, Dungeons & Dragons is considered one of the pillars of tabletop role-playing games. Taking place in a fantasy universe, it is often cited by video game developers as an important influence, and it is not uncommon to see it on certain tables of our favorite series. The challenge of bringing it to the screen has already been taken up in the past, with unfortunately more tricks than miracles, like the Courtney Solomon film that fans prefer to forget. Against all odds, Dungeons & Dragons: Thieves' Honor was a nice surprise for Spring 2023. The announcement of a new D&D film was received rather coldly by a community traumatized by the first cinematic trilogy. But it is clear that the feature film was a success.
Rewarded with excellent ratings (91% on RottenTomatoes) and warmly received by the general public (93% on RottenTomatoes), Dungeons & Dragons: The Honor of Thieves knew how to hit where it was needed and where it was needed. However, producing a new film in this series was a risky bet for Paramount, even if Stranger Things somewhat revived the hype around the franchise. Despite good figures in France, Dungeons & Dragons: The Honor of Thieves only collected “only” 93 million US dollars on its domestic market.. Internationally, D&D made do with $115 million. With an estimated budget of 151 million dollars to which one must add expensive marketing costs, the 208 million gleaned around the world pale in comparison.

Will there be a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons?
With its good reviews and territories where it has performed well, Dungeons & Dragons could be the ideal candidate for a sequel. Unfortunately, and as reported by our colleagues from Sensacin, Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Collins made his terms clear. At Variety, he first left the door ajar by declaring “not having given up on the idea of making a sequel”, before suddenly slamming it: “but we need to find a way to do it cheaper”. As you can imagine, with its 208 million dollars at the box office for a budget of 151 million dollars, the figures did not convince the giants of Paramount. And it is not certain that a sequel with less budget will be to the taste of the fans…
