If the TV series is developed by Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, it is based on DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The production history of the series is rather chaotic. Initially, it was thought by And For HBO Max, where a large part of DC works could be found. Moreover, the two characters appeared in season 3 of Doom Patrol (performed by Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant). But there was a lot of commotion: HBO Max became MAX and Warner implemented a new strategy for its DC universe. As a result, Warner finally sold the rights to Netflix.

The streaming service then opted for a new cast (George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri) to make a clean sheet. That's not all, because Netflix has set another condition for integrating the series into its productions: linking Dead Boy Detectives in the same universe as Sandman, another series inspired by a comicbook by Neil Gaiman. This explains, for example, the cameo of Kirby Howell-Baptiste, the actress of Death in Sandman.

Even if the easter eggs actually remain tenuous, everything takes place in the same supernatural world, with its same rules, and all the characters are likely to cross paths. Crossovers, subsequently, are not impossible if Dead Boy Detectives has the same success as its parent series. It also remains to be seen whether season 2 of Sandmancurrently in production, will contain references to Dead Boy Detectives.

If Netflix seems to want to develop any universe Sandman on his platform, Neil Gaiman doesn't seem to feel the slightest need for it. “ Do I want to create a gigantic 'Sandman universe'? Not really “, he confides to Business Insider.
