Nintendo annual review: the last before the Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has published its latest figures concerning Nintendo Switch hardware and games until March 31, 2023. Enough to take stock of the first fiscal quarter (January 1, 2024 – March 31, 2024).

This quarter, the Nintendo Switch shipped 1.96 million units, down from 3.07 million units the year before. Over the entire fiscal year, it totaled 15.7 million units sold, bringing the total to 141.32 million consoles since its launch in March 2017. Along with this, the total number of Switch owners playing annually increased to 123 million units worldwide. Remember, this figure includes everyone who turned on their Switch to play something during the last fiscal year, which would therefore extend from April 2023 to March 2024. As you can see, not only New people are buying and playing the Switch, but owners from years past are still turning on the console. 123 million active players out of 141 million owners is an incredibly impressive number!

Concerning game sales, and other small information, on the fiscal year:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 20.61 million units worldwide (+330,000 units in the 4th quarter).
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder sold 13.44 million units (+1.48 million units during the fourth quarter).
  • Pikmin 4 sold 3.48 million units (+180,000 units during the fourth quarter).
  • Princess Peach Showtime shipped over 1.22 million units in 10 days. The NDS game sold 1.7 million LTD.
  • The release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a notable impact on Mario game sales.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 8.18 million units in the past fiscal year (+1.39 million units in Q4), bringing total sales to 61.97 million of units.
  • Super Mario RPG has shipped 3.31 million units to date. It has sold 170,000 copies in the last three months. It is the 4th best-selling Mario RPG title in 5 months of marketing (see below).
  • In total, 31 games (1st and 3rd party) sold more than a million units during the past financial year.
  • Splatoon 3 has shipped 11.96 million units to date, including an additional 250,000 units this quarter. Less than 1.4 million units before Splatoon 2 was dethroned as the franchise's flagship title.
  • The Nintendo Switch (Hardware) sold 15.70 million units (-12.6% year-on-year).
  • The Nintendo Switch (games) sold 199.67 million units (-6.7% year-on-year) (see below).
  • Digital sales reached 443.3 billion yen (+9.4%), with good sales for downloadable versions of retail games and DLC and an increase in Nintendo Switch Online sales. Yen depreciations also helped.
  • The Mobile + IP business saw its sales jump to 92.7 billion yen (+81.6%), mainly thanks to Super Mario Bros.
  • Nintendo's strategy for the current fiscal year remains unchanged: try to put several Nintendo Switch consoles in each household (or even one for each person) in order to stimulate sales of the Nintendo Switch. The company also plans to continue releasing new games and DLC to keep players interested (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in May, Luigi's Mansion 2HD in June, and more).
  • The Nintendo Museum at the Uji Factory will open this fall.

Looking at Nintendo Switch activity over the entire fiscal year (April 2023 to March 2024), good sales were recorded for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which sold 20 .61 million units, for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which sold 13.44 million units, and for Pikmin 4, which sold 3.48 million units. Additionally, the April 2023 release of The Super Mario Bros. movie. Console sales for this period totaled 15.70 million units (a decrease of 12.6% year-over-year), and game sales totaled 199.67 million units (a decrease of 6 .7% year-on-year). Although this represents a decrease compared to the previous financial year, sales are stable for a platform which is in its eighth year of existence.

Regarding the digital business of our dedicated video game platform, downloadable versions of packaged games and add-on content for Nintendo Switch sold well, and revenue from Nintendo Switch Online also increased. Digital sales reached 443.3 billion yen (an increase of 9.4% year-on-year), also helped by the depreciation of the yen.

In the mobile and intellectual property businesses, sales totaled 92.7 billion yen (an increase of 81.6% year-on-year), supported mainly by revenue generation related to The Super Mario Bros. Movie during this quarter.

In the end, the overall turnover reached 1,671.8 billion yen, of which 1,309.2 billion yen was for sales outside Japan, accounting for 78.3% of the total, and the operating profit increased. is amounted to 528.9 billion yen.
