After massive resentment from Steam customers, Sony is no longer insisting on linking Helldivers 2 with the PlayStation Network (PSN).

After a presumably exhausting weekend, Sony Interactive is giving up purified: “Helldivers fans – we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network accounts to be linked for new players and for current players starting May 30, will not continue. We're still learning what's best for PC gamers, and your feedback is invaluable. Thank you again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we will keep you updated on future plans.”

What the PlayStation Group has in the vocabulary 'feedback' expresses is nothing less than a full-blown shitstorm – which has led to the previous 'very positive' User reviews for the extremely popular online shooter Helldivers 2 on Steam turned into the opposite within a few days.

The reason: Sony Interactive had insisted that the PC version be linked to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account – citing security requirements. The audience, however, saw this as unnecessary nagging and data collection – especially since the previous optional solution had become a requirement overnight. Added to this was the fact that PSN is not available in many countries.

The Swedish Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios initially had little choice but to support the publisher's decisions. Studio boss Johan Pilestedt nevertheless admitted a certain degree of complicity, expressed understanding for the resentment and announced 'compensation'. He thanked Sony Interactive for that “fast and effective” Decision.

Helldivers 2 has been available for PlayStation 5 since February 8, 2024 and is estimated to have sold more than eight million copies since then. The shooter is currently one of the most played PlayStation and PC titles – despite an extremely dense field of competitors.
