Burgundy Franche-Comté Region Plans to Secure a Sovereign Cloud

Alongside the national cloud, the Region Burgundy Franche-Comté wants to have its own regional cloud by installing a data center. “With a regional cloud, we will respond to a problem of sovereignty and proximity. There is a psychologically reassuring dimension of knowing that the data is secure and is located as close as possible, even if the data is redundant in other data centers “ specifies Patrick Molinoz, vice-president in charge, in particular, of digital transitions which envisage interregional links.

The future equipment will be intended for local authorities such as town halls, intercommunal levels, departments and the region, but also for various management unions, national education or public health structures. “We are addressing all regional public actors who manage data. The important thing is to be able to recover them if their security is no longer guaranteed, whether due to digital attacks or external hazards.”

Specifications that remain to be established

To implement this new tool, the community has already allocated five million euros to its budget and hopes that it will be operational between 2026 and 2027. To design its future equipment, the Region is releasing 200,000 euros to carry out the study preliminary which will validate the technical deployment and define the specifications of the regional cloud.

If the final geographical location matters little to the elected official provided that it meets the economic or technical requirements in proximity to a connection node, the choice of management raises questions. “Are we doing something completely public with premises, servers and staff from the Region or are we going through service providers and a private network?” The study launched will define the best economic and technical model for the management methods of the future cloud which will also be pioneering in environmental matters.
