A video was published by Paul Tassi, a YouTuber and editor for the American media Forbes, revealing intriguing information about an aborted project involving the game studio Bungie and Netflix. According to Tassi, Bungie initially set out to create an animated series based on the Destiny universe in collaboration with Netflix. This project would have been canceled even before Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion at the start of 2022. Despite initial progress, it seems that this project has not passed the development phase of script. Paul Tassi mentions in his video information, not officially confirmed, according to which this collaboration was abandoned shortly before the acquisition of the studio by the Japanese giant.

The implications of this cancellation

The cancellation of this project suggests an uncertain future for the expansion of the Destiny universe beyond the realm of video games. While Bungie had expressed its desire to expand the franchise into other media, notably television and cinema, this cancellation constitutes a major setback in this ambition. Fans of the license may be disappointed by this news, deprived of the opportunity to discover their favorite universe from a new angle. However, Bungie does not seem to be giving up on this goal as they have recruited in 2023 former vice president of development and programming at Warner Bros., Gabriel VanHuss.

Destiny has a universe of stories to tell, and I can't wait to work with our incredible creative team to bring them to life. For fans, current and new! exclaims Gabriel VanHuss on his social networks

Now Head of Media at Bungie, he supervises content broadcast in a linear manner, such as on television or radio, as opposed to streaming or video on demand platforms. Thus, this opens the way for potential future collaborations.

There is still hope for Destiny!

Despite the abandonment of this project with Netflix, the future of the Destiny universe in the field of other media remains possible. Hiroki Totoki, interim CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, spoke of the American firm's desire to explore new avenues for Bungie franchises, including in the field of cinema. In addition, the mention of a possible collaboration with the streaming platform Crunchyroll suggests another opportunity for the studio, in its desire to offer an animated version of its universe. With Sony's expertise and resources at its disposal, Bungie could further realize its ambitions to diversify and offer Destiny fans exciting new experiences.
