The return of live action

According to various sources from Variety magazine, the streaming platform Netflix has a new project under its belt: a live action Scooby-Doo series! Plot details remain unknown to this day, other than the fact that the project will be mainly based on the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon. On the screenplay are Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who have already worked together regularly, notably on another live action adaptation: Cowboy Bebop.

This series project is therefore in line with the two live-action films which have already seen the light of dayrespectively Scooby-Doo in 2002 and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed in 2004, generating nearly $430 million in revenue. The project will have the difficult task of taking up the torch of a legendary license, which has already been disfigured by the animated series Velma which was strongly criticized by spectators and the press alike.

Finished but not out

This new Scooby-Doo project, if it is already not very reassuring due to its choice of live action, is also not safe from cancellationlike the animated film Scoob! Holiday Hauntwhich was to be the sequel to Scoob!, which featured the meeting between the talking dog and Sammy. Even though it was almost finished, the project was canceled just a few weeks before its release.

We had a few hundred plans that needed to be completed, lit, rendered and then approved. According to official figures, the film was 95% complete, but according to Warner Brothers, information was leaked and they were unable to call us at the time the news leaked. So we found out in a shocking way. -Michael Kurinsky (Variety)

The production of the film was apparently already very difficult for the teams, due in particular to a very tight two-year schedule, from the first page of the script to the release. The plot was to focus on Scooby-Doo's first Christmasin the heart of a small picturesque village, at the home of Fred's uncle, Ned. The feature film was still finished by the teamsbut Warner's silence on the subject does not bode well for a potential release of the film.
