While AI is slowly making its nest in the production of entertainment (films, series, games), James Cameron firmly believes that the technology could one day replace a director.

In the future, what will be the place of AI in the production of our films, series and video games? That's a good question ! While the question was part of the demands of the SAG-AFTRA strike movement – which paralyzed Hollywood in 2023 – several works took the plunge, like the 100% artificial intelligence credits of the Marvel series Secret Invasion! This is just the first step, and more than one director is now trying to entrust technology with writing a script (the short film Sunspring, reports the site Tech Wire Asia). Ultimately, will our filmmakers be AI?

After all why not

“If you have an artificial intelligence that has an ego, a conscience, who’s to say it’s not an artist?” states James Cameron, famous director of Avatar, Titanic and Terminator, in the columns of Financial Times… However, the man believes that even if you can “snap your fingers to get a cool image, you can't make a film of it”! The filmmaker is used to marathon and “endless” filming, like that of Avatar 2 Way of the Water. The second episode of its cult saga, which set a new milestone in 100% digital cinema in 2009, took 13 years to see the light of day. It was finally released in 2022 and became the 3rd highest-grossing feature film in history ($2.3 billion in revenue) behind Avatar 1 | Avengers Endgame.

A technology fanatic

In short, the guy is a lover of innovations, and also explains to the Financial Times that he is in the process of developing “3D technology” compatible with the Apple Vision Pro – based on his years of experience in digital cinema material. However, Cameron does not think that 3D can solve everything, in particular the performance of an actor in front of the camera, like Schwarzenegger in Terminator. “The machine could give you a plausible performance,” says the filmmaker, “but it will not give you the original creative moment of an actor, linked only to him and his life experience. We are all generative AI, vast data sets for every experience we have had… AI can give you a picture, not an emotion”.
