2K Games is finally talking about the sequel

In a recent announcement, 2K Games announced the acquisition of the Texas development studio Gearbox Software. But the publisher also has news for fans of the “Borderlands” series.

In the past few months we have repeatedly received information about the ongoing work on the loot shooter “Borderlands 4”. The developers at Gearbox Software themselves also recently fueled the rumors.

However, the latest offshoot of the popular loot shooter series has not yet been officially confirmed. This was taken over by those responsible at 2K Games in the wake of the announcement that the publisher would take over the responsible developers from Gearbox Software for a price of 460 million US dollars.

2K Games would like to complete the purchase of Gearbox Software during the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year and thus by June 30, 2024.

Successor is in active development

As announced in today's announcement, Borderlands 4, or the next big title in the successful series, is among the titles in active development at Gearbox Software. Unfortunately, 2K Games left it unclear when the next “Borderlands” adventure could be officially revealed.

Most recently, reports made the rounds about an announcement at PAX East 2024 this month. Rumors that are known not to have come true. Gearbox Software has so far only hinted that the new “Borderlands” will be the biggest title in the studio’s history.

2K Games is looking forward to working with the Borderlands creators

“With nearly 20 years of shared history, Gearbox has played a critical role in our success thanks to their unique ability to create interactive entertainment experiences that incorporate beloved characters, exciting new worlds and humorous storytelling,” commented David Ismailer, President of 2K Games Acquisition of Gearbox Software.

“We are thrilled to welcome Randy Pitchford and his team of passionate, talented developers to 2K, and we look forward to releasing numerous projects as colleagues in the future,” the publisher added.

“We have loved every collaboration with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands series and are excited to be actively working on the next installment of the series.”
