Fallout 4 is now almost nine years old. It's not for nothing that fans are longing for another main part of the post-apocalyptic role-playing game. Now one of Bethesda's chief developers has commented on the development of Fallout 5 and explained why it is taking so long.

A resource is crucial

Thanks to the release of the new series from Amazon, the Fallout franchise is on everyone's lips again and the titles that have already been published are also experiencing a second spring. This also ensures that the calls for the fifth part of the game series are getting louder again.

So has the Fallout fan Leo via X (formerly Twitter) asked which part of the development of a game at Bethesda Game Studios takes the longest. To our delight, Studio Design Director Emil Pagliarulo from Bethesda Game Studios answered in detail:

That's a good question. A complicated question. Regardless of any of our games, there can be many reasons why development time fluctuates. At Starfield we have spent a lot of time improving existing technology and developing new technology. We also took a short break to assist with Fallout 76.

At the end of the day, however, one resource is crucial – people. As with any development team, we have talented people who take time to create great things. And we can't do everything at once.

It's obvious that developers need a lot of time to create a good new game. This can also be seen in the development times of other top titles from other studios such as Red Dead Redemption 2. That took a full eight years. Not to mention GTA 6. Of course, the waiting time is still a bit frustrating for fans.

You'll probably have to wait a long time for Fallout 5

With the last sentence of his answer, Emil Pagliarulo is probably alluding to the fact that before a new Fallout, it's The Elder Scrolls 6's turn. This has now at least left pre-production. The team also continues to work on regular updates for Starfield as well as the extensive expansion Shattered Space, which is scheduled to be released in 2024.

Since Starfield still requires a lot of work and the Skyrim successor is not expected before 2027, you should probably say goodbye to the idea of a new Fallout offshoot this decade.

However, you won't leave completely empty-handed: At least the MMORPG Fallout 76 will continue to be provided with new content and a next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 will be released in a few days. Amazon has also already announced that there will be another season of the series.
