Time Change Elimination Delayed Until 2024

The changeover to summer time will take place on the weekend of March 30 and 31, 2024. This measure was supposed to end. However, the matter has been pending for years within the European institutions.

Like every year, the last weekend in March coincides with the time change. On the night of Saturday March 30 to Sunday March 31, 2024, France switches to summer time. At 2 o'clock it will then be 3 o'clock — 60 minutes will be added to legal time. So we lose an hour of sleep.

Will we ever end the time change? The question arises because not so long ago, the European institutions showed themselves ready to put an end to this measure. In 2019, the European Parliament voted in favor of ending the time change. Since then, the matter is supposed to be studied by the Council of the European Union, made up of ministers from the member states. The year 2021 had even been envisaged as the year of the end of the time change. However, 3 years later, the file is still sleeping in a drawer. It is pretty clear that this will not change in 2024.

Ending time change is not a priority for Europe

As long as the EU Council does not put the subject in its program and express its position, member states, including France, continue to alternate between winter time (the last weekend of October) and summer time (the last weekend in March).

If Europe finally decided to stop changing time, each country in the union would then have to choose between keeping winter or summer time. The French have already come out in favor of summer time, which has many advantages, such as sunnier evenings.
