Sony should open up to other platforms, say the Ori makers

In an official statement, Thomas Mahler from Moon Studios spoke about the current development of the video game industry. According to Mahler, this would benefit if Sony Interactive Entertainment, alongside Microsoft, also considered possible multiplatform releases.

The development and the thousands of layoffs in recent months have made it abundantly clear that the video game industry is currently undergoing change.

Above all, the rising costs of video game development are what many publishers say are giving them headaches and making them look for possible solutions. Microsoft decided to do this a few weeks ago, overall four titles from Xbox Studios to be released for other platforms such as the PS5.

Unconfirmed reports According to this, if it is successful, further Xbox titles could follow. A development that Thomas Mahler, the founder of Moon Studios, says he welcomes. At the same time, he expressed the wish that Sony would also pursue such an approach at some point and open up to other platforms.

Moon Studios no longer wants to be tied to one platform

Moon Studios is currently working on the action role-playing game “No Rest for the Wicked”, which recently went into early access on PC. As Mahler explained, it was already clear at the start of development that Moon Studios no longer wanted to be tied to one platform and instead wanted to focus on a multi-platform release.

“Yes, we had this big vision from the start and there were already a lot of PlayStation fans who wanted ports of Ori. That's why we knew that since Wicked was going to be a multiplayer game, it shouldn't be tied to a single platform. “Especially since we knew that our competitors wouldn’t be either,” said Mahler.

“That’s why I like Phil’s current direction at Xbox. If we had finished Wicked with Xbox back then, it would have been an Xbox exclusive. “I think Xbox is now more open to supporting all games on all platforms and honestly, I would like Sony to adopt that too,” added the Moon Studios co-founder.

“If we want our industry to grow, we need to end gatekeeping and make access as easy and affordable as possible for everyone.”

Is PlayStation also thinking about multiplatform releases?

If we exclude the “MLB The Show” series, which is also released for the Switch and Xbox consoles for licensing reasons, then Sony Interactive Entertainment is primarily concentrating on the PS5 when it comes to new releases.

While live service titles like “Helldivers 2” appear simultaneously for the PC and the PS5, single-player titles from PlayStation Studios on the PC take much longer to arrive.

However, reports from last month suggested that this strategy could sooner or later falter. Insider Nick Baker wanted to find out that Sony Interactive Entertainment could also open up to other platforms. In detail it will be about “Helldivers 2”, which is intended for release on other platforms such as the Xbox Series X/S would come into question.

According to Baker's information, the PlayStation makers may have already had initial discussions with Microsoft about this. Statements that Sony Interactive Entertainment neither commented on nor confirmed.
