Guerrilla Games today announced the one-year anniversary of the story DLC for Horizon Forbidden West. “Burning Shores” was released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on April 19, 2023. Here protagonist Aloy ends up in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.

In contrast to the main game, the download expansion has only been released for the current-gen console. In favor of higher graphics quality, the development team decided against a PS4 version.

The focus on the PS5 paid off: According to Digital Foundry's performance analysis, it is a visual masterpiece.

But it wasn't just the graphical representation that was convincing, but also the story and gameplay. The players were particularly amazed during the epic boss fight. As a result, the DLC made it to one Metascore of 82 points.

Review bombing because of a particular game scene

The situation is completely different with the user score, which is just 4.5 points and is therefore in the red zone. However, the reason for this was not the quality, but a certain cutscene. Here protagonist Aloy kisses a woman, which caused an uproar online.

Because of this review bombing, Metacritic announced stricter MetaCritic moderation a short time later. In any case, Guerrilla wasn't impressed by the hate and said that people like that should just accept it to ignore.

“Burning Shores” is for 19.99 euros available in the PlayStation Store. The main game required for this is currently available at a 34 percent discount. So you currently only pay 39.59 euros for the post-apocalyptic action role-playing game. There is also one Complete edition available.
