Introducing the TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 Distribution Kit for Network Storage Creation

iXsystems Company published distribution TrueNAS SCALE 24.04, which uses the Linux kernel and the Debian package base (the company's previous products, including TrueOS, PC-BSD, TrueNAS and FreeNAS, were based on FreeBSD). Like TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS), TrueNAS SCALE can be loaded and used for free. Size
iso image 1.5 GB. Thanks for reading texts of TrueNAS SCALE-specific builds scenarios, web interface And interlayers published on GitHub.

The Linux-based TrueNAS SCALE edition is now the main edition, and the FreeBSD-based TrueNAS CORE branch has been placed in maintenance mode, where they plan to fix bugs and security issues for many years to come. New features and new versions of components will be developed only in the TrueNAS SCALE branch. TrueNAS SCALE is not the only FreeNAS variant based on Linux – in 2009, the OpenMediaVault distribution separated from FreeNAS, which was transferred to the Linux kernel and the Debian package base.

One of the features of TrueNAS SCALE is the ability to create storage located on several nodes, while TrueNAS CORE (FreeNAS) was positioned as a solution based on a single server. In addition to increased scalability, TrueNAS SCALE also features isolated containers, simplified infrastructure management, and is suitable for creating software-defined infrastructures. TrueNAS SCALE uses ZFS as a file system (OpenZFS). TrueNAS SCALE provides support for Docker containers, KVM-based virtualization, and ZFS scaling across multiple nodes using the Gluster distributed file system.

To organize access to storage, SMB, NFS, iSCSI Block Storage, S3 Object API and Cloud Sync are supported. To ensure secure access, the connection can be made via VPN (OpenVPN). The storage can be deployed on one node and then, as needs increase, gradually expand horizontally by adding additional nodes. In addition to performing storage management tasks, nodes can also be used to provide services and run applications in containers orchestrated using the Kubernetes platform or in KVM-based virtual machines.

IN new version:

  • Updated versions of Linux kernel 6.6.20, OpenZFS 2.2.3 and NVIDIA driver 545.23.08. The package database is synchronized with Debian 12.
  • New pages have been proposed for tracking and managing the state of SMB and NFS sessions.
  • An interface has been added for viewing audit logs related to the operation of SMB clients, actions with accounts and authorization.
  • Support for configurations based on a centralized system for user identification has been added to account fields processed via LDAP FreeIPA.
  • Added support for isolated SCALE Sandboxes, reminiscent of LXC containers in Linux and jail environments in FreeBSD.
  • Developer mode is proposed for fine-tuning TrueNAS.
  • Added a new summary widget (Dashboard) to monitor and quickly perform backup-related actions.
  • Added Netdata interface (Reporting > Netdata) for analyzing system performance.
  • Redesigned forms for creating shared access sections.
  • The form for creating backups in cloud storage has been redesigned.
  • ZFS has updated its implementation of the Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC) cache to improve read performance.
  • New privilege levels have been added to delegate individual administrator powers to users.
  • Improved performance when working with SMB partitions containing a large number of files.
  • Added support for importing data into an SMB partition from external systems using the Syncthing file synchronization system.
  • Increased quality control. The release of TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 is marked as the most stable release in the history of the project.
