Gamingdeputy reported on April 13 that Japan’s NTT DOCOMO, NTT, NEC and Fujitsu jointly issued a communiqué, announcing the development of the world’s most advanced wireless equipment suitable for the sub-terahertz band. The 100GHz frequency band and 300GHz frequency band were verified and achieved ultra-high-speed transmission of 100Gbps.

Gamingdeputy Note: 1THz is equal to 1000GHz. Compared with the frequency bands currently used by 5G (such as 28GHz), the sub-terahertz frequency band from 100GHz to 300GHz is a high-frequency band with shorter transmission distance, but can support faster data transmission speeds.

According to reports, the four companies have been jointly conducting research and development of sub-terahertz equipment since 2021, aiming to achieve the research and development of sub-terahertz band wireless equipment for high-capacity wireless communications in the 6G era.

They are now using this jointly developed wireless device to conduct wireless transmission experiments in the 100GHz and 300GHz frequency bands, achieving ultra-high-speed transmission of 100Gbps within a foreseeable transmission distance of 100m. This is equivalent to 20 times the speed of the current fastest 5G network (approximately 4.9Gbps).

The sub-terahertz frequency band is a very high frequency band compared to the millimeter wave frequency band currently used by 5G (such as the 28GHz frequency band), so the basic element of wireless communication – communication hardware – needs to be developed from scratch. To develop this new type of wireless device, it is necessary to clarify the device performance requirements based on the application of mobile communication systems, as well as the development of new devices to achieve the required performance in the sub-terahertz frequency band and many other challenges.

The communiqué mentioned that network applications in the 6G era include the metaverse, autonomous driving, etc. In order to meet this demand for large-capacity wireless communications, the sub-terahertz frequency band with larger bandwidth is generally optimistic. According to reports, the four companies have achieved the following achievements:

DOCOMO

After analyzing the wireless system configuration and performance required for 100 GHz telecommunications applications, DOCOMO successfully developed wireless transmission equipment that can transmit data rates equivalent to 100 Gbps over a distance of 100 meters.

NTT

Based on research into 300 GHz wireless equipment and related equipment such as RF wideband mixers, NTT has developed a top-of-the-line wireless device capable of transmitting data at 100 Gbps per channel over a distance of 100 meters in the 300 GHz band .

NEC

After analyzing wireless system configurations for telecommunications in the 100 GHz band, NEC developed a multi-element active phased array antenna (APAA) consisting of more than 100 antenna elements.

Fujitsu

Fujitsu has researched high-output, high-efficiency signal amplification compound semiconductor technology that can extend communication range and reduce power consumption in the 100 GHz and 300 GHz frequency bands, and has developed a high-output amplifier with the world's highest power efficiency.
