This is how you turn Google TV and Chromecast into a PS5

The PS5 supports remote play functions, which not least benefit owners of the streaming handheld PlayStation Portal. But Android/Google TV devices and Chromecast are not left empty-handed either, as Sony highlights again in a new video.

With PlayStation Portal Last year, Sony brought a streaming handheld onto the market that, contrary to previous expectations, struck a chord with many gamers. For months the hardware was almost sold out and even Sony appeared surprised.

The underlying principle is not new. It is based on the PS5's remote play feature, which can also be used in combination with other devices. In a current YouTube video, Sony once again presents the possibility of remote play with Android/Google TV devices and Chromecast* to use.

Remote play lets players switch to an alternative screen

To stream PS5 games to supported devices, a PS5 and an active PlayStation Network account are required. Users download the necessary Remote Play app on the target device from the Google app store and follow the instructions. The PSN account mentioned must be the same on both the PS5 and the Google device.

As with PlayStation Portal: When playing remotely, the games are still calculated by the PS5. The scenes land on the streamable screen via the network connection. The DualSense controller is finally registered in the Bluetooth settings of the Google device. Sony provides extensive information about remote play and controller support on multiple systems available on the official website.

The advantages of remote play are obvious: If the living room is occupied and players want to continue their gaming session undisturbed, they simply move to another room that has compatible hardware. The console does not have to be moved for this.

In the video about the remote play feature, the gaming room appears to be the alternative alternative, while the console is apparently in the living room. And there is obviously no shortage of controllers in the demo household.

With its focus on remote play, PlayStation Portal is apparently more limited than the hardware would allow. Already last year suggested a Sony representativethat true cloud gaming wouldn't be a big hurdle from a technical point of view. Whether anything will follow remains to be seen.

Have you used remote play in the past?
