Dragon's Dogma 2: Microtransactions are criticized

“Dragon's Dogma 2” achieved high ratings and at the same time met with disappointed faces. Many players are critical of the microtransactions.

“Dragon's Dogma 2” has a Metascore of 87, making it one of the best-rated games of the young year. However, after the launch of the Capcom title, which hit the market today, it became clear that many players have a different opinion.

On Steam, only 46 percent of players are impressed with “Dragon's Dogma 2” and gave it a positive rating. There were a lot of “balanced” reviews, which contrasts with the positive ratings from the testers. But what do players complain about?

Microtransactions are often criticized

The word “microtransaction” is often mentioned in the negative reviews on Steam. The additional purchases were only activated at launch and were not part of the tests. It was only mentioned in the linked review guide.

Such guidelines are often PR-heavy and could be used for this purpose – this is what it emphasizes Jez Corden from Windowscentral – to influence the opinion of the testers. That's why he usually avoids it.

There are actually plenty of microtransactions in “Dragon's Dogma 2”. These include Rift Crystals, which serve as in-game currency to recruit characters and purchase items, as well as Objective Crystals, which players use to create fast travel points.

There are also disposable keys for escaping prison cells, camping equipment that weighs less than normal equipment, and other accessories. The prices are often between 1 and 3 euros. There is a “startup aid” for 14.99 euros.

The available resources are also earned within the game. However, some of them are rare and limited, which gives the microtransactions in “Dragon's Dogma 2” a certain flavor.

“Unfortunately you are ruining everything with the microtransactions and the lies about fast travel…” says one Steam user. Other players agree.

Before the launch of “Dragon's Dogma 2,” the avoidance of excessive fast travel was justified by the fact that it only makes sense in a game with a boring world. “Traveling is boring? “That’s not true,” said director Hideaki Itsuno.

A lot of work has been put into the game so that there is always something to experience and discover:

“The game is good and it's fun,” said another review on Steam. “But the fact that there are microtransactions to create or customize a new character in a single player game is sick…”

The microtransactions are by no means the only reason why “Dragon's Dogma 2” is being punished on Steam. One Overview of player opinions opens here.

Players are also greeted by a number of microtransactions on the PlayStation Store:

There are plenty of additional investment opportunities.

In the PlayStation Store, the backlash is manageable. “Dragon's Dogma 2” has an average rating of 4.48/5. However, here too ten percent of the owners only gave the minimum rating.
