All locations of the Holotape games for the Pipboy

In Fallout 4, the developers at Bethesda have… legendary PipBoy a new function has been added. So-called holotapes can now be inserted and played on the top of the arm computer. However, the makers don't just use this so that the player can listen to various voice recordings of various characters. In the spacious Boston wasteland are also hidden for special holotapes that contain games that you can play on your Pipboy. Play within the game, so to speak.

These mini-games are adaptations of well-known classics from the early days of video games. Fans of Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and Missile Command will find the similarities hard to miss. In this article we will give you a brief overview of the five games, describe where they were found and briefly talk about the real model. You can also see a short video in which you can see the location in Fallout 4 (buy now / €18.99 ) understand and get a first impression of the game.

Red Menace

The first mini-game for your Pipboy can be found very early in the game, before you even have the arm computer. After waking up from cryostasis, you explore Vault 111 and eventually come to a room where electricity is discharging. Before you continue following the waypoints through this room, take a short detour to the nearby recreation room. Here you will find the leisure terminal on a table. In addition to the overseer memo and top ten, you will also find the menu item “Play tape”. This is how you start the game. You can use the menu at the bottom of the screen or press the R key to take the holotape out of the terminal in order to use the game later with your Pipboy.

When playing Red Menace, it becomes clear very quickly that here Donkey Kong served as a great role model. Instead of Mario, you control a brave Vault Boy and instead of Donkey Kong with barrels, a communist octopus throws atomic bombs around. You have to climb the level using ladders to save the lady in distress. Of course, you have to avoid the atomic bombs and rolling fireballs. As a short-term protection, you can pick up power armor in some places.

Atomic Command

You can find this game at the Museum of Freedom in Concord. You get there for the first time as part of the main quest. On the upper floor of the museum you will meet Preston and the Minutemen for the first time. There you will also find the issue of Robco-Fun with the holotape from Atomic Command. The booklet is on the right side of the room on a desk next to a terminal.

Atomic Command is of course a homage to the Atari classic Missle Command. You control a stationary gun turret and have to shoot down the approaching nuclear missiles before they reach their target. In the Fallout 4 version of the game you defend New York, Washington DC, Seattle, Las Vegas, San Francisco, St. Louis, Mount Rushmore and Boston.

Pipfall

The next issue of Robco-Fun with the holotape for Pipfall can be found in Fort Hagen in the west of Boston. You will also end up there during the main quest “Seeing again is fun”. In the command center of Fort Hagen, where you have to survive the boss fight with Kellogg, you will find a small area with modern tables and equipment. The magazine you are looking for is lying on the table next to a terminal.

Pipfall is the Fallout 4 variant of Pitfall. A classic from Activision from 1982. In it, you controlled the eponymous title character Pitfall Harry through a labyrinth-like jungle and had to avoid natural dangers. In Pipfall you control a Vault Boy instead, with whom you have to find five hidden bobbleheads. Dangers such as mutants, radiation and rolling barrels have to be avoided.

Zeta Invaders

This game is relatively easy to track down once you get to Diamond City. To do this, go to Detective Nick Valentine's office in the alley at the back of the city. Here too, the game is included in a copy of Robco-Fun. The magazine is on the desk in the right corner of Nick's office, next to a newspaper.

In this case too, most gaming veterans will probably be familiar with the model. It is of course Space Invaders, one of the arcade classics par excellence. Published in 1978, it is one of the pioneers of the then very young medium of video games. As in the original, in Zeta Invaders you control a ship and have to fend off waves of alien attackers before they reach their destination.

Grognak the Barbarian and the Ruby Ruins

For the final game you have to go to Goodneighbor. There you make your way into the cave of memories. Cross the large main hall and take the stairs on the left into the basement. In Doctor Amari's lab, there is a table on the left side of the room. The corresponding issue of Robco-Fun with the holotape is on it.

Grognak the Barbarian and the Ruby Ruins is not only the longest title of the five Pipboy games, it is also probably the most complex of these mini-games. It is a classic text-based role-playing game from the beginnings of the genre. First you choose two companions before you can go to different points on a rudimentary world map. There you may find treasures and certainly monsters that guard them. The fights are classically turn-based.
