With SVOD platforms, we sometimes go from surprise to surprise. While we often fear the cancellation of a series, spin-offs come out of nowhere and do even better than the original show!

While many viewers are waiting for the sequel to “Sandman” on Netflix, a surprise spin-off, called “Dead Boy Detectives” recently took over the streaming platform’s charts. More particularly in 3rd position – as reported Forbes. In this series, we follow two ghosts tasked with solving supernatural mysteries! Characters from the same universe as Morpheus – King of Dreams originally taken from the Sandman comics – and also created by author Neil Gaiman. Dead Boy Detectives currently includes a season of 8 episodes, all on Netflix.

Better than the original

The most surprising thing about all of this is that this spin-off is getting even more positive reviews than Sandman (which had already won over the crowds – in 2022). On the reference site Rotten Tomatoes, the series of the two ghosts received a 91% from the press (84% from the public). The media Polygon speaks in particular of a hell of a good time, with an adventure that first resembles a fun passage to adulthood, then a “serious supernatural mystery”. Yes, beyond successful writing and a duo of characters – played on screen by George Rexstrew | Jayden Revri – the suspense seems to be there! Each episode, the team of investigators must solve a new case.

The return of Sandman?

For its part, still on Rotten Tomatoes, the Sandman series “only” garners an 88% from the press and 80% from the public… In any case: the TV show remains a very good adaptation of Neil’s tortured and mysterious comics Gaiman. A second season is also expected at the end of the year or early 2025 (production resumed in November 2023). As for Dead Boy Detectives, we don't yet know if there will be a Season 2! Obviously, the success and more modest budget of the series (which had raised doubts about the sequel to its Sandman) should help it move in this direction.
