Yet Another Promising Series Canceled: The Frustrating Reality of TV Show Endings

While waiting for season 2 of House of the Dragon, yet another potentially abandoned Game of Thrones spin-off series is making waves again. In any case, everything seems to indicate that it will never see the light of day.

In an interview with Inverse, screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Man on Fire) reveals to us the sad fate of a script he had imagined for a Game of Thrones spin-off series. This was to be called 10,000 Ships and would focus on events well before those recounted in the hit HBO series.

Another Game of Thrones spin-off series stuck in port

Like the characters of Game of Thrones, the spin-offs around the cult HBO series sometimes meet a disastrous fate. The latest news is that a series centered on Jon Snow has been canceled. Another series project joins this sad court, known as 10,000 Ships. This was to tell us the story of the legendary Nymeria and its floating city, some 1,000 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones. As a reminder, this is also the name of the she-wolf taken in by Arya Stark.

My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this brief passage about her in a Westeros encyclopedia. Broadly speaking, it was the story of Moses, but with Nymeria in the lead role. His country is ravaged and his people are forced to live on the water. This is why the series was called 10,000 Ships. Over time and through dangers, they manage to find a new home, in the same vein as the Israelis leaving Egypt », explains Brian Helgeland.

A promising scenario, but for the moment in limbo

The spin-off series seemed compelling. But I think HBO wasn't keen on the fact that the period covered was so far removed from that of the Game of Thrones series. That's why it was canceled. But nothing is ever really dead “. Taking into account the enormous success of House of the Dragon, HBO could indeed return to this promising script. Let us also remember that the events depicted in this series are also far removed from those of the original series. This will also be the case for The Hedge Knight, taking place 300 years before.

Depending on the reception of season 2 of House of the Dragon coming in June and The Hedge Knight at a still undetermined date, HBO could therefore reconsider the fate of 10,000 Ships. For the moment, however, we should not count on it too much. Especially since filming a series that takes place mostly at sea is certainly not an easy thing, despite the numerous technological developments in this area. For now, Queen Nymeria must therefore sail alone with her people towards a still uncertain future.
