Xbox at the end? Microsoft reveals major problems with the PS5 competition

Hard times lie ahead for the Xbox. In what feels like the eternal console war with direct competition in the form of the PS5, things are now looking pretty bleak for the Xbox Series X/S. The Microsoft console has been lagging behind in terms of sales figures for some time compared to the current PlayStation. The current figures speak a language that is as clear as it is frightening. Stands the end of the Xbox before?

How much does an Xbox Series X/S cost?

Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2020, so the two consoles have already been around for more than three years. The slightly less powerful Xbox Series S has the same processor as the Xbox Series X (buy now €499.00 )but with a lower clock frequency.

In addition, the built-in GPU is around 67 percent slower. In return it is currently around 255 euros also significantly cheaper. For the Xbox Series X, however, up to 500 euros are due. However, things currently look bleak for both models.

Is the Xbox on the verge of extinction?

Microsoft recently the current business figures are published. At first glance, these don't look bad at all; sales in the gaming sector have increased by 51 percent compared to the previous year. By far the largest share of this comes from income the games from Activision Blizzard, which includes the popular shooter brand Call of Duty. Significantly more negative numbers can be seen in the Xbox segment.

As shown in Microsoft's report, the sales figures of the Xbox Series X/S are in direct comparison to the same period last year decreased by a remarkable 31 percent. The US group assumes that the numbers will fall even further in the next quarter.

The star of the Xbox console is therefore located still in decline, a major trend reversal is currently not in sight. It is therefore hardly surprising that Microsoft will increasingly focus on publishing former exclusive games on other platforms.

What's next for the Xbox?

However, Microsoft probably doesn't want to give up the console division completely (yet). An official confirmation is still pending, but such a step in the competitive hardware market at least seems understandable.
