Gearbox Software joins Take-Two and therefore Rockstar

In a press release released last night, Gearbox Entertainment announced its transfer. With the Swedes of Embracer Group since April 2021, the development studio behind the Borderlands shooting game license has been bought by the Americans of Take-Two Interactive. The parent company of Rockstar (developer of GTA) acquired Gearbox in a deal estimated at 460 million dollars (426 million euros). According to her, the acquisition should be completed before the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year, that is to say before June 30, 2024.

By acquiring Gearbox Software, Take-Two therefore recovers the rights around the Borderlands license but also Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, Homeworld and even Duke Nukem. However, it leaves licenses like Remnant or Hyper Light Breaker. An initiative that delights Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox Entertainment:

The association with Take-Two Interactive/2K will allow Gearbox to move up a gear. Take-Two and 2K have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to our engine of creativity, happiness and profit. We set the bar for interactive entertainment and achieved remarkable results with groundbreaking games and records when we worked together as independent partners. I'm incredibly excited about what we can accomplish now that we're fully aligned.

It must be said that we cannot blame him for saying that Gearbox Software has obtained remarkable results: Borderlands is a series of shooting video games mixing dark humor, comic book aesthetics and which is distributed to more than 80 million copies. A number that is expected to increase in the years to come.

Borderlands 3 Launch Trailer

Borderlands 4 is officially in development

In fact, it is the media BusinessWire (at the origin of the information concerning the takeover by Take-Two) who drops a bomb: Borderlands 4 is in development, and it is the president of 2K (subsidiary of Take-Two and publisher of Borderlands since 2009) David Ismailer who says it:

We are excited to welcome Randy Pitchford and his team of passionate and talented developers to 2K and look forward to launching many projects in the future as colleagues. We've loved partnering with Gearbox on all iterations of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be actively involved in the development of the next installment in the series.

A buyout that clearly changes the situation since developers will be able to work more closely with their publisher. Enough to put Borderlands back in the spotlight after the release of the third episode in 2020, even if we must not forget the release of the film of the same name scheduled for this summer.
