This infamous card game makes its first appearance in a video game

An interesting detail about “Star Wars Outlaws” emerges from an age rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Accordingly, an infamous card game from the “Star Wars” universe appears for the first time in a video game.

Months before its official release, the open-world adventure “Star Wars Outlaws” is already generating plenty of conversation. Here we are primarily referring to the Jabba the Hutt mission, which quickly disappeared behind the pay barrier.

You can find further details on this topic and an official statement from Ubisoft here. Aside from the discussions about this mission, a current age rating for “Star Wars Outlaws” delivered good news for all fans of the “Star Wars” universe.

As can be seen from a corresponding rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB for short), the card game called “Sabacc” is waiting for us in the world of “Outlaws”. Even though its rules were confirmed in 1989, this is the first time “Sabacc” has ever appeared in a video game.

Sabacc is played according to these rules

Sabacc is a card game played throughout the galaxy. Han Solo in particular was considered a very skilled player. “Sabacc” is an old card game in which the aim is to achieve a certain value with your cards. One of the special features is the fact that, depending on the region, there are more than 80 different variants with individual rules.

On Lothal, for example, a value of 23 must be achieved. Additionally, the regional version on Lothal differs in that the value of a card could change if the card was not in an interference field.

Other popular versions include the Jhabacc variant, in which the stakes are particularly high, or the Bastatha version, in which the value 20 must be hit.

Unfortunately, the extent to which the different rule sets are taken into account in “Star Wars Outlaws” was not clear from the description of the ESRB rating. Instead, it just says: “As the game progresses, players can wager in-game currency in Sabacc, a blackjack-like card game with detailed rules.”

Content is more important than a large game world

In a recent interview, the developers at Ubisoft Massive once again discussed their goals. Creative Director Julian Gerighty emphasized that his team is primarily concerned with a high density of exciting content. The size of the game world, however, plays a minor role.

“If you open the map, the location we created for Mirogana is quite compact,” said Gerrighty. “We wanted to create something that offered a lot of activities and wasn't overly expansive. Where you get lost and there isn't much to do. It’s very, very focused on providing a dense, busy city experience.”

When asked, the creative director confirmed that another point of criticism of previous open-world titles had been addressed by Ubisoft. We'll tell you what Gerighty was referring to in detail here. “Star Wars Outlaws” will be released on August 30, 2024 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

In addition to the standard version of the open world title, Gold and Ultimate editions are available, which bring exclusive content and are now available can be pre-ordered.
