The Witcher Series Canceled by Netflix: What Happened?

It was on the occasion of the announcement of its next releases, this April 18, that Netflix revealed that the last two seasons of The Witcher would be filmed consecutively, the series ending at the end of the fifth season. If the end is not really for now, but is still a disappointment for the fans, already saddened by Henry Cavill's departure from the TV show.

We had the choice to make Geralt leave and end the series. But that's not something we wanted to do. There are too many stories left to tell – Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner of The Witcher (TotalFilm).

The showrunner also explains that the departure of the Geralt actor weighed in the balanceand that he “in no case would there have been any question of centering the action on another witcher”. It is Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games) who will finally take over the role of Henry Cavill, but the departure of the latter had already sounded the death knell for the project for many viewers, some have even launched a petition to ask for the series to be stopped. It is clear that they seem to have been heard.

No worries for Netflix

If the announcement was rather sad for the remaining fans of the show centered on the witcher, other big releases have been announced and are already making fans salivate. The second season of Squid Gamethe Netflix event series, should be available from the second quarter of 2024alongside the final season of Cobra Kaithe news of The Night Agent, Outer Banks or Emily in Paris.

This rush of programs is due to the late release of the writers' and actors' strike, which delayed many shows and films already scheduled. Despite the end of The Witcherthe streaming platform still has good years ahead of it. The Witcher's fourth and fifth seasons are set to adapt Andrzej Sapkowski's final three books, namely Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. The team in charge of the series also explains that they are “delighted to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to an epic and satisfying conclusion“.
