The Redict project has been established to create a fork of the Redis DBMS.

In response to a change in the license for the Redis DBMS, a fork was created that will be distributed under the name Redict and will continue to develop the release-appropriate codebase Redis 7.2.4, the latter under the BSD license. Redict can be used as a transparent replacement for Redis 7.2.4, but compatibility with future versions of Redis that will be released under a proprietary license is not guaranteed.

Fork was founded by Drew DeVault (Drew DeVault), author of the Sway user environment, the Hare programming language, the Aerc email client and the SourceHut collaborative development platform. Helwenn Monnier joined the work on the fork (Haelwenn Monnier), browser author BadWolf (based on WebKitGTK) and platforms Pleroma for the deployment of federated social networks.

Redict code license changed from BSD to GPLv3, i.e. Redict project will be able will migrate fixes published for older versions of Redis under the BSD license, but fixes and changes created for Redict under the GPLv3 license cannot be transferred to Redis. The project will also not require developers to sign an agreement on the transfer of property rights to the code, which, if they intend to change the license in the future, will require coordination of this step with each of the developers.
