The Potential for Disappointment in Fans of a Popular Franchise

Netflix could have obtained the rights to adapt a series of cult games from a prestigious studio. An unfortunate combination of circumstances, however, disrupted these promising plans.

This is exactly what Paul Tassi indicates in a new report from Forbes. If we are to believe what he says, Netflix was considering a scenario to adapt the Destiny games into an animated series. This would all date back to 2022, when Bungie's situation was very different.

A Netflix series like Destiny turned upside down

It's well known that Netflix is fond of adapting video games into animated series, and most of them are of very high quality. You only have to see the excellent productions Arcane: League of Legends and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to be convinced. So, adding an animated series inspired by the Destiny franchise to its catalog could have had some appeal.

Things were clearly on track in this area in 2022. Bungie was then in discussions with Netflix to see what turn such an adaptation could take. Both parties even seemed rather advanced, discussing potential scenario ideas. But all that unfortunately changed when Bungie lost its independence again following its acquisition by Sony that same year. If there were to be an adaptation of Destiny, it would therefore be done under the aegis of Sony Pictures. Netflix therefore found itself with the grass cut out from under its feet. Its hopes for this project were finally completely dashed in 2023. The studio then hired a former executive from Warner Bros. with a view to taking the Destiny franchise beyond just video gaming media.

Another Light of Hope for Destiny?

Despite all these developments, however, the idea of adapting Destiny into a series has yet to see the light of day, whether it's produced by Netflix, Sony Pictures or anyone else. Other PlayStation franchises should be given priority for film or television production. We think in particular of God of War, a priori on the side of Prime Video, or even Horizon, this time on the side of Netflix.

Even though Destiny will not be entitled to an adaptation anytime soon, Bungie is far from being finished with this license. Final Form, the next major expansion of the second opus, will indeed arrive on June 4. After that, a sequel may be in the works, in addition to the return of Marathon, the first love of the creators of Halo. Destiny can sometimes play very strange tricks on us.
