Release of NetBSD 8.3

Four years since the last update to the 8.x branch published operating system release NetBSD 8.3, which completed the maintenance cycle for the netbsd-8 branch. Thus, the NetBSD 8.x branch received updates for 6 years. The release is classified as a corrective update and includes fixes for the backlog of stability and security issues identified since the publication of NetBSD 8.2 in April 2020. For those who are interested in new functionality, a significant release of NetBSD 10.0 was released in March, and an update to NetBSD 9.4 was offered in April. For loading prepared 750 MB installation images available in builds for 57 system architectures and 16 different CPU families.

Among the notable changes in NetBSD 8.3:

  • Updated versions of libX11 1.6.10, xterm 366 and tmux 3.1c.
  • Data on time zones and DNS root servers has been updated.
  • Support for new variants of the WAV format has been added to the audioplay and audiorecord utilities.
  • Support for relative redirects when using HTTP has been moved to the ftp utility.
  • httpd supports processing of files larger than 4GB on 32-bit systems.
  • On systems with large amounts of RAM, the limit that determines the maximum allowed number of open files has been increased.
