PS5 version is apparently about to be announced

Will a PS5 version of “Minecraft” be released soon? There is a hint that preparations are being made in the background.

“Minecraft” has been one of the most popular games for years and also regularly appears in the PlayStation charts. Until now, however, fans had to make do with the PS4 version, which can be played on the PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility.

Even though the new Sony console has been available since the end of 2020, there has been no announcement of a current-gen port yet. That could change shortly.

Notes on PS5 version of Minecraft

The PS5 version of “Minecraft” could discover PlayStation Game Size, as a tweet suggests.

The Twitter/X account regularly posts information based on background data from the PlayStation Network. And the PS5 port of “Minecraft” apparently became visible:

The Xbox version of “Minecraft” recently received 4K support, but is also not available as a current-gen version.

Last year, an Xbox Series X/S version of the Mojang title appeared on various rating platforms. But according to Microsoft, the entries were just part of one of the usual approval processes that it regularly carries out with various evaluation committees.

PS5 version with ray tracing support?

While the presumed PS5 version of “Minecraft” will generally make use of the possibilities of the current generation, an explicit feature could be supported with ray tracing.

A prototype with ray tracing support was accidentally activated on Xbox consoles in 2021. He showed up with a preview build.

Mojang later provided clarification: “This early prototype code has been removed from preview and does not indicate any near-future plans to bring ray tracing support to consoles.”

Since PlayStation Game Size did not reveal any further information about the PS5 version of “Minecraft”, it is unclear when the launch will take place. If there is actually an announcement, you will find out on PLAY3.DE.

First early access, then $2.5 billion

“Minecraft” initially started as an early access version for the PC in 2009 before its final launch in 2011. Versions were later released for numerous systems, including consoles, handhelds, mobile and Fire TV.

“Minecraft” and its developer Mojang have belonged to Microsoft since 2014. The Xbox company invested $2.5 billion in acquiring the entire package, which by today's standards doesn't seem that gigantic.

There hasn't been a “Minecraft 2” yet, but there have been spinoffs like “Minecraft Dungeons”, Minecraft Earth” and “Minecraft Legends”. The last mentioned game lands in the PS Plus library in April.
