OPPO A78 review: a handy long-lived smartphone – Wylsacom

You can’t envy smartphone manufacturers: technology has reached the limit, and somehow you need to sell new devices.Analysts talk about stagnation in the gadget market – everything has become the same, and when choosing a smartphone, you are guided by price and sympathy for the brand.

How to get out of an impasse is an exciting question, but a solution will definitely be found. In the meantime, a pleasant abundance reigns in the smartphone market, and the choice among middle-class models is such that your eyes run wide.Another representative of this world is OPPO A78.It has a special price – for 19,990 rubles we get 256 GB of memory, a juicy screen with 90 Hz, a capacious battery and fast charging included.

Neat minimalism

For the photo, I chose the bright version in a greenish tint. The case is elegant and shimmers, forming a pattern of lines.I am glad that the shiny surface, contrary to expectations, turned out to be not glossy, but matte. And it looks impressive, and there are no prints left on it.And if you don’t really appreciate cheerful colors, but prefer black classics, then there will be OPPO A78 in this color. It comes with IP54 splash protection, not a particularly high standard, but better than nothing.

Within a reasonable

The dimensions are normal, the smartphone is thin and not very heavy. The power button is on the right, above it is the volume rocker – after Pixel 7, where everything is exactly the opposite, such simple logic is directly pleasing. The smartphone is rather narrow, the sides are flat and not slippery. In general, they didn’t get smart, they did it simply and conveniently.

Standards

In terms of image quality, everything is at the proper level. The picture is clear, not super bright, but the display remains readable under the scorching sun. When the midday heat subsides, everything is perfectly visible on the street.

AMOLED screen with all the usual settings, in particular, you can choose between a light and dark theme, choose bright or more natural colors, change the color temperature.

If desired, you can switch from smoother 90 Hz to basic 60 Hz, but why? There is no particular difference in the operating time, but the difference in the smoothness of the transitions will still be noticeable.Always On mode is supported, when notification icons, date, time, smartphone charge level are visible on the locked screen. If any of this is not needed, then the extra data can be hidden. It is convenient that the function can be set by timer to save battery.

In the same part of the text, I will add about the under-screen fingerprint scanner. It is very fast and works without errors, nothing more to say.

Base Camera

The smartphone has three cameras: an 8-megapixel front camera, a 2-megapixel auxiliary camera for shooting portraits, and a 50-megapixel main camera. In addition to the automatic mode, manual settings work in the Pro-shooting mode if you suddenly get bored.Traditionally, the “portrait” software processing works, as well as a night preset for long exposure frames in low light.

If during the day in good light the results are normal, then when shooting night or evening scenes, the software can no longer cope and artifacts come out.Clarity suffers, noises come out – but this is not even a representative of the upper middle class to find fault with him like that.

The video is recorded in Full HD and at 30 frames per second – the settings are downright very modest, the quality is appropriate.

Not gaming, but not retarded

During testing, the smartphone received an update, installed it, and, according to my feelings, the phone began to work more smoothly.Sometimes there were minor delays while moving through the menu, but after installing the latest version of the software, they disappeared.

You can play, Call of Duty Mobile will run on medium settings.Unpleasant throttling tests for a smartphone are not a problem, there are no critical subsidences, everything is at a reasonable level. When using the smartphone does not overheat, which is also very pleasing.

Benchmark results, in case someone else is interested in them

Everything is fine with performance, and if necessary, the amount of RAM can be doubled from 8 to 16 GB using part of the built-in 256 GB.Switching between applications is smooth, the system has quite a lot of pre-installed programs, but you can get rid of all this abundance manually.

I liked that the OPPO A78 has a triple card tray: you can put two nanoSIMs on one side, and add a microSD card on the other. The presence of USB-C is a matter of course, but a 3.5 mm headphone jack is a pleasant rarity these days.

Praise the smartphone for stereo speakers. They are very loud, and there is also a brutal Ultra Volume Mode, which further amplifies the sound. It will be not just loud, but VERY loud, you can incur the wrath of colleagues if you leave the phone on the table and go on business.

Quick unboxing

I remember that earlier in a box with smartphones there was a simple, but still free case. Now there is no such thing. But there was a USB-C to USB-A cable and fast charging at 67 watts.Plus a traditional clip for a SIM card, of course.

Charged quickly, use for a long time

If you want a trouble-free smartphone with good autonomy, buy a middle-class Android smartphone. The flagships are powerful and cool, but the performance is not so impressive. But middle schoolers do not fail.A day of active use is easy, with no digging in the settings, everything works right away.

Under high load, like games, it takes about 17-20% per hour, that is, you can count on at least 5 hours of screen time.If you watch a video, then for an hour at medium brightness, YouTube takes 6-7%.

In the first screenshot, battery consumption per day: from 4.5 hours of screen time, 47% is left in stock. The third one shows that in the period from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. it took only 2%

On average, I got about 7-8 hours of screen time, the battery lasted a day with a margin. For comparison, my iPhone 14 gives out 5-6 hours, 14 Pro Max – also about 5-6.I thought about whether to switch to Android, since the latest iPhones work so little.

The kit comes with a 67 W charger – according to the manufacturer, it fully charges the smartphone in 50 minutes. In practice, the process is really fast, powerful charging out of the box works as it should.

Issue price

The OPPO A78 smartphone with 256 GB of memory went on sale for 22,990 rubles, but it can be found on sale for 19,990 rubles. And there is also a version with 128 GB of memory, all of a sudden, 256 GB is too much for someone.

Conclusion

After spending a week with OPPO A78, I can’t say anything bad about it.It may not be ideal, for example, I would like a better camera and a higher level of protection against water, but given its special price and other features, the option is at least interesting. There are no noticeable shortcomings, and after use there are pleasant impressions.

The smartphone does not suffer from megalomania, it has a convenient size. The time of small devices is a thing of the past, but for a smartphone with such a large screen, it turned out to be small. In the pros, good speed and adequate performance.A fast fingerprint scanner, stereo sound, decent autonomy, a colorful screen and a lot of memory to the heap.
