Nintendo gives information about the concept of the new hardware

It seems that Nintendo is not daring to experiment with the next console. A revolution is therefore not to be expected, as the company suggests.

The fact that Nintendo is working on new hardware was no secret even before the latest announcement. But it has been officially confirmed since yesterday: The Japanese will Successor to the Switch reveal in the current financial year. Even before the planned announcement, the company reveals which concept Nintendo would like to use to mobilize customers this time.

After the Wii U debacle, the company got down to business and introduced the Switch, a system that is similar to the display pad of the previous console, but can also be used as a standalone handheld. It's a successful recipe that the manufacturer apparently wants to take up again with changed ingredients.

Gamers can expect the next model of the Switch

According to industry analyst David Gibson, during the recent financial results conference call, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa responded to a question about whether the new console will be something completely new by saying, “The next model of the Switch is the correct term for it.”

This statement is unlikely to knock the socks off of most fans. The many leaks and rumors of the past few months also suggest a successor that will be more iterative than revolutionary. This means that customers receive a new version of a proven concept.

Not without reason. The Switch has the chance to become the most successful console of all time. More than 141.3 million copies have been sold so far. And with a surprisingly high forecast for the current fiscal year, Nintendo would have at least 155 million sales.

Until a few weeks ago, the Switch would have caught up with the PS2. However, former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan gave an updated number for the classic Sony hardware referenced 160 million PS2 sales. The old number is still listed in Sony's documents, but with an evaluation period until March 31, 2012. At least in Japan, the PS2 was delivered until the end of the year.

Sales figures are one thing, profits can be viewed as more relevant. In terms of margins is Nintendo better positioned than Sony and a comparison of the profits generated since 1981 makes it clear that the Switch is a real gold mine:

In the end, it remains to be seen what Nintendo has in store for the Switch 2. Leaks and rumors suggested a larger 8-inch LCD display. It goes without saying that the performance increases. There is also said to have been a change in concept for the Joy-Cons. Supposedly they have a magnetic attachment.

The Switch 2 is expected to be released next year. It is unclear which quarter the Japanese have in mind. There is also no reliable information about the price.
