Logitech MX Brio 4K webcam in the test – the revolution for dark rooms?

Logitech's webcam delivers excellent image quality, but there are drawbacks in the microphone quality and there could have been more options.

Webcams are a dime a dozen, and depending on the device, the quality varies between excellent and you can't see anything at all. If your webcam, whether freestanding or permanently installed, is one of the latter and you often need one, Logitech may have a good choice for you with its new MX Brio 4K webcam. If you're willing to spend 230 euros on a webcam.

Box & Accessories: In the small, manageable packaging you will find the webcam itself, a mounting clip with a removable adapter, a USB-C cable and the operating instructions. In short, everything you need. Not more but also not less.

Design and processing: The differences compared to the previous Logitech Brio can be found in the revised design, AI features and the larger sensor. Here you have a sensor with 8.5 megapixels, which should provide significantly finer details. You also want to increase performance in low light. Will that work? We'll deal with that in a moment.

The webcam itself has a cylindrical shape, a large lens in the middle and a shiny metallic surface in the color graphite (there is also a light gray version). There is a small wheel around the lens that you can use to close the flap in front of the lens. So you definitely have privacy, which you can set directly on the device. An LED informs you when the device is active, and there are two microphones installed. The back is not quite as attractive; this is where you will find the USB-C port. And you definitely need it on your PC too.

What is clearly noticeable is the heavier weight compared to other webcams. The MX Brio 4K weighs an impressive 137 grams. That's quite a bit of weight for such a device, especially since its predecessor only weighed 63 grams. With the mounting clip you even get 176 grams, so depending on your setup you may have to fiddle around a bit before you find the ideal position. The USB-C cable could also have been a bit thinner and less noticeable. At the same time, however, it provides a kind of counterweight and keeps the camera from falling forward (if it is not very stable).

Performance: Logitech attaches great importance to the fact that the MX Brio should deliver good results even in low light. And in this case it's not just marketing talk. Even in dark rooms, the MX Brio displays your face in detail and clearly. And that is the most important thing in such scenarios. Sure, the dark sections of the room no longer look so great, but they aren't the focus either.

As I said, the details on the face are preserved, such as the skin or hair. Of course not quite as perfect as in the best lighting conditions, but in the dark this is a really good performance.

And when it's bright, everyone can see if you have any blemishes on your face. Bad for me, good for the camera, because it shows how detailed the MX Brio captures you. It doesn't matter whether it's on your face or in the colors, patterns and surfaces of the clothes you wear. In ideal conditions you will have an excellent image, whether at 30 fps in 4K or 60 fps in 1080p.

Can the integrated microphones keep up? Well, let's say partially. The voice quality itself is okay for a webcam. Not great, not bad. You are understandable and if that is the main criterion for you, then the webcam does a reasonable job. Anyone who streams professionally probably has an appropriate microphone one way or another. And if not, this is definitely the better alternative.

The AI-supported noise canceling works quite well and is able to filter out noises such as typing on the keyboard or a fan running next to you. There is very little that bothers you when you talk.

Software: Players make their settings using Logitech's G-Hub software. Alternatively, you can do this when streaming with Logi Options+ and in the business area with Logi Tune. So everyone becomes happy, more or less. The options aren't really extensive. You can adjust the field of view, as well as things like exposure time, ISO or automatic exposure.

Regulations for temperature, contrast and so on are also possible. You can also turn the camera downwards and, for example, present things in front of you on the desk. Show mode automatically rotates the image so that everyone can see something else correctly. Unfortunately, you won't find any filters or background options.

The Logitech MX Brio 4K webcam is available to purchase from, among others Amazon.de, Media Markt or notebooksbilliger.de.

Logitech MX Brio – Conclusion

Do you need the MX Brio from Logitech? It depends. If you have a video call here and there, you don't actually have to spend 230 euros on this webcam; a cheaper option (or the camera built into the laptop) in conjunction with a good headset is sufficient. The MX Brio is more of an option for you if you have regular and longer video calls. Or when you stream. For its price, it delivers excellent work in light and dark rooms. Just a few more options would have been nice and the microphone quality isn't the best. Unfortunately, you have to make a few compromises, but when it comes to image quality, the MX Brio really presents itself at its best.
