Rising star of the 90s notably thanks to Bill & Ted and Speed, it was at the end of this decade that Keanu Reeves saw his career explode following the Matrix trilogy which began in 1999 and concluded in 2003 with Matrix Revolutions. In the process, the Canadian actor's career was more complicated in the 2000s until the early 2010s. A feature film perfectly illustrates this chaotic period in Keanu Reeves' life, since it is one of the biggest failures for the actor: 47 Ronins. Today, this film is available on Netflix and Prime Video.

A plot reminiscent of Rise of the Ronin

As indicated by his name, it is a film which takes place in the context of feudal Japan and therefore features samurai. In this context, we follow the adventures of 47 wandering warriors who swear revenge and restore their honor after a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their tribe. Lost in unknown lands, this band of rebels will have to ask for help from Kai, played by Keanu Reeves, who is a formerly disowned half-blood to survive in this violent universe filled with mythological monsters. Over time, this rejected slave will become the group's greatest weapon, as well as a heroic figure who leads this rebellion.

A resounding failure for Keanu Reeves

If 47 Ronins remained a resounding failure, it's because it cost Universal more than $175 million, which had no return on its investment at all. In terms of box office, the film only grossed $150 million while the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are far from positive. If the film is recommended by 48% by the public, the critics are far from being as generous since they only recommend the feature film by 16%, ouch. Among the criticisms, we can read online that the film looks more like it was made by a handful of producers rather than a director with a well-defined vision.

However, everything is not to be thrown away in 47 Ronins. Internet users praise, for example, the production value of the film, namely the sets, the costumes and others which still add to the charm of this adventure.. Something to please those who are in a samurai mood after playing Rise of the Ronin. In any case, you can still discover 47 Ronins on Netflix and Prime Video.
