Joy-Con malfunction: Nintendo falls short

The Switch is a great console. Nevertheless, it has an annoying problem: Joy-Con drift. Not only are the players annoyed by the controller defect, Nintendo also reached its limits, especially at the beginning.

Joy-Con drift left repair companies overloaded

The Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con drift has now achieved cult status. A faulty design causes the controller to recognize inputs even though you don't even touch the stick. However, the problem was not an isolated incident. Thousands of players reported the errorwhich Nintendo initially vehemently denied.

After several class action lawsuits in the USA, Nintendo decided to offer its customers a free repair of drifting Joy-Cons, which can still be done today.

But while the players were very happy about this step, the promise of repairs caused concern elsewhere lots of stress and frustration – At least that's what comes from a statement from a former department head of a repair company that, among other things, took care of the Joy-Cons sent in in America.

According to the descriptions of the source, who was not named by Kotaku Thousands of Joy-Cons every week repaired by unskilled workers. However, since they had little experience in this area and were only trained for a short period of time, mistakes often occurred, which further increased the stress on the employees. Because despite all odds, the repair center should repair at least 90 percent of all Joy-Cons within 4 days (source: Kotaku).

Nintendo remains silent

Before the article appeared, Kotaku asked Nintendo for a statement – however, the company did not respond to the request by the time the article was published. That's not surprising either. After all, Nintendo only officially apologized for the problems with the Joy-Cons in the summer of 2020. One would probably have preferred to bury the topic in silence.

Good to know: A small piece of cardboard is sometimes enough to fix the Joy-Con drift of your Switch controller. At least one YouTuber made this spectacular discovery about a year ago. Just try it out if you are affected yourself – or send in your Joy-Cons and have them repaired or replaced.
