Jack Dorsey ditches Bluesky, his proposed Twitter alternative

“No” : in a short message in response to an Internet user on X (formerly Twitter), Jack Dorsey confirmed on Saturday that he was leaving the board of directors of the social network Bluesky. Since the official launch of the platform in February 2023, Jack Dorsey had not been very involved in the social network: he had only spoken about it twice before closing his account in September.

The next day, Bluesky thanked Jack Dorsey on his official account for “his help in financing and launching the Bluesky project”, adding that he was looking for a new board member. Neither Bluesky nor Jack Dorsey explained the reasons for this departure. However, in a subsequent message on X (formerly Twitter), Jack Dorsey wrote: “Don’t rely on companies to grant you rights. Defend them yourself using the technologies of freedom (you are on one of them)”.

Bluesky was launched by invitation in February 2023, before being available to everyone in February 2024. The platform presents itself more like a clone of Twitter, with the same profile, message publishing, interaction and certification functionalities .

Jack Dorsey outlined the first ideas for this social network in 2019, with a team created within Twitter, with the aim of making it a social network “decentralized”. This principle has, to date, still not materialized. Bluesky brought together many users disappointed by the turn taken by Elon Musk after the takeover of Twitter. It had 5.6 million registered users and 1.4 million active monthly users as of February. A figure far from X (formerly Twitter) and its 174 million monthly users.
