The director of Deadpool & Wolverine wanted to reassure those who are afraid of going to see the film without having watched all the X-Men and MCU adaptations. According to him, nothing is essential.
This summer, the anti-hero Deadpool will make his return to the big screen. This time, he will not be alone: for his first adventure integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has invited Wolverine – in a version which is not that of the films X-Men. Their association promises to be explosive, facing an unprecedented enemy. Deadpool & Wolverine will of course echo elements of the MCU, a universe born more than 15 years ago (we see some in the trailers).

Many will then ask themselves an inevitable question. Do you have to have seen all the Marvel films and X-Men out before Deadpool & Wolverine ? This prerequisite would then be extremely time-consuming and tedious, as this shared cinematographic universe is vast.
Shawn Levy, the director, is aware of this. This is why he made reassuring remarks in an interview published on April 25 on AP News. In short, he built Deadpool & Wolverine to be understandable to everyone.
No need to revise to see Deadpool & Wolverine
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become damn huge since 2008, especially since its extension to television with the Disney+ platform, via series. But Shawn Levy wants to be clear on one point: to go see Deadpool & Wolverine, there will be no need to be absolutely up to date. In his eyes, it’s a summer blockbuster that we will go see with a light heart.
“ I made this film with all the respect and gratitude to the fans who are the most passionate about this mythology, this universe and these characters. But I don't want to make it an obligation. This film is designed for entertainment, with no need to do any research to prepare for it “, he promised.

There is no doubt that those who have devoured everything from the MCU and the films X-Men will have an advantage in understanding references and winks. This was already the case in the first films Dead Poolincluding with external inspirations — like the joke on the green suit made with special effects, a gag homage to Green Lanterna bad DC Comics adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds.
However, here is the list of content that could be viewed before Deadpool 3 :
- All movies X-Men in which Wolverine appears (both trilogies);
- All movies Wolverine (there is three) ;
- Dead Pool And Deadpool 2 ;
- The key films in the MCU, leading up to the conclusion ofAvengers: Endgame ;
- Series Loki (for the TVA, or Tribunal of Anachronistic Variations, and the notion of multiverse).
That's still a lot.
