Creative tool or game? Co-founder explains new project

Media Molecule may have said goodbye to “Dreams,” but not to video game development. And the studio's next work apparently goes in a different direction.

Media Molecule has produced creative games over the past few decades that follow the “Play Create Share” philosophy. These include parts of the “LittleBigPlanet” series, but also “Dreams”, published in 2020. The last mentioned work ended Live support last year.

Since work on the previous project has been completed, the team is now concentrating on the next major project, about which little information is currently available. However, Mark Healey, one of the founders of Media Molecule and former creative director, has roughly outlined what players should expect and what they shouldn't expect.

It's probably in good hands

In an interview with MinnMax, Healey was asked about the future of the studio. He himself left Media Molecule last year, but is likely to continue to maintain good contacts, even if he appears to be somewhat clueless.

“I think it’s in good hands now,” Healey said. “I don't know exactly what stage your project is at now. But I don’t think it’s a secret that they’re working on a new IP, for example.”

The further statement was also rather cautious, but makes one sit up and take notice. So Media Molecule's new project seems to be a game that deviates from “Dreams”.

“I would venture to go so far as to say that it is more of a game than a creative tool as I understand it,” said Healey. Of course, that doesn't mean that the tools are completely ignored.

On the subject:

Last March we reported that Media Molecule only narrowly escaped closure be. Sony announced at the time a larger wave of layoffs. And in October of last year the decision was made to 15 to 20 percent of the Lay off Media Molecule employees.

According to Healey, fans shouldn't worry too much about the studio. “Sony still has a lot of faith in Media Molecule, at least they will develop this game,” he said.

Media Molecule's current creative director is John Beech, who was previously at “Tren” worked. It was created with “Dreams”.

There is also a problem with LittleBigPlanet 3

The discontinuation of “Dreams” support is not the only cut that Sony Interactive Entertainment had to make as a publisher.

Most recently, the PS4 servers for “LittleBigPlanet 3” switched off for an “indefinite period of time”., after they were previously unavailable due to technical problems. The announcement sounds like they won't be returning.
