Countdown to Mario’s End: Nintendo to End Game in Days

On April 8th, Nintendo will cut off the online functions of Super Mario Maker, robbing the Wii U classic of its most important feature. If you want to take one last look at the fans' creations, you have to hurry – the countdown is on!

It was only a matter of time before Nintendo drew the line under Super Mario Maker – especially since there has been a successor, Super Mario Maker 2, for almost five years. Now it's clear when Nintendo will drop the hammer: On April 8, 2024 will Nintendo Disable online functionality in Super Mario Maker on Wii U. From this point on you can no longer download new levels from the internet and try to achieve the best times or simply enjoy the community's creations.

So if you still have a particularly tricky level on your to-do list or just want to take another nostalgic look through Super Mario Maker, you should hurry up.

One level drove everyone crazy

Talented players had come together to achieve a particularly ambitious goal: they wanted Every level in Super Mario Maker is successfully completed at least once. For most people this wasn't a problem – after all, many players' first creations are incredibly simple. Building a decent Mario level is sometimes harder than you think.

But the “Team 0%” has actually been biting its teeth on one level for quite some time: Trimming The Herbs. In this level, players have to maneuver over numerous rotating saw blades while collecting red coins through the perfectly timed use of bombs in order to reach the goal through a door at the end. A successful attempt takes less than 20 seconds claimed, but only level creator Ahoyo managed to conquer his level – after all, that is a prerequisite for the upload.

Team 0% has confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that they have so far no legitimate completion of the level can record. However, we now know why: Ahoyo never finished his level himself. Instead, a TAS was used – a “tool-assisted speedrun”. This means that Trimming The Herbs is out of the rankings, meaning that Team 0% has officially achieved its goal.
