Sometimes all it takes is a helping hand from fate, an SVOD service and its tens of millions to relaunch a saga. Fallout, the emblematic video game franchise of the post-apocalyptic era, can thank Prime Video. His series is a hit and it brings video games in its wake. However, the director of this Amazon Original has just shattered the dream of New Vegas fans.

Is the Fallout series canon?

Fallout is a science fiction series belonging to the post-apocalyptic subgenre produced by Amazon Studios and adapted from the famous video game license of the same name now in the hands of Bethesda Softworks (and therefore Microsoft following the acquisition of the North-American firm). American for XX billion US dollars). Even better, this Prime Video exclusive is officially canon and fully fits into the chronology of the saga. And it was Todd Howard, the head of licensing at Bethesda, who recently confirmed this to our colleagues at IGN:

We pay attention to the chronology. There may be a little confusion in some places. But everything that happened in previous games, including New Vegas, happened. We are very careful about this. All I can say is that we're strengthening ties, but the bombs are falling right after the events of New Vegas. – Todd Howard (Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios)

The end of New Vegas

Released on April 10, 2024 exclusively on Prime Video, the series was instantly a success. It records excellent scores in terms of viewing and the reception it receives is equally excellent. This original Amazon-branded production has a press rating of 93% on RottenTomatoes while that of spectators is at 89%. However, fans of the saga know it. One of the most popular video games still in 2024 Fallout New Vegas developed by RPG mastersnamely Obsidian Entertainment (Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Pillars of Eternity, The Outer Worlds).

Unfortunately, everyone who dreamed of seeing this video game brought to the small screen will be disappointed. Indeed, Todd Howard's recent statements (see above) support a theory that New Vegas was razed to the ground by nuclear bombs long before the events of the television series. The only hope of one day seeing this role-playing classic be adapted into a series is in the hands of Amazon Studios, which may (or may not) develop a prequel set in New Vegas. Nothing is less sure. To console fans, season 2 has just been made official.
