Childhood dream or remake nightmare? German fantasy classic The Neverending Story returns

German films can often be thrown in the trash. Neither romantic comedies with more or less talented C-celebrities nor the 175th new edition of Tatort inspire the masses worldwide. However, the fact that beautiful stories can be made into films in the land of poets and thinkers can be seen in internationally renowned projects such as nothing new in the West.

Series formats like Deutschland 83 also show the potential of German-language productions. How fitting, then, that an early example of a successful film from our country should soon be celebrating a comeback. After all, it is the never ending Story by Michael Ende is not just a novel by a German author.

In the year 1984 A film adaptation of the classic children's book appeared on the big screen. This wasn't shot in Hollywood, but rather on our doorstep. To be more precise, they worked at the Bavaria Filmstadt, a film studio in the middle of Munich.

The story about the boy Bastian is a phenomenon not only in the literary world. The film is also considered an absolute classic of the 80s and impressed, among other things, with its effects and soundtrack. The film's music was so legendary that the BBC released the song Ivory Tower later for her Formula 1 broadcasts should use.

According to Variety, they are not just planning a one-off appearance of the never-ending story. Instead, the report speaks of a series of adaptations of the children's book. We don't yet know when exactly the first film will be released in cinemas. Possible actors remain a secret for the time being, as do possible differences from the 80s film.

We remain excited about the co-production between See-Saw Films and Michael Ende Productions. See Saw is behind current streaming giants such as the series Heartstopper or Oscar winners How The King's Speech.
