Anime is said to have sparked a new boom

In an interview, the CEO of Toho revealed that the global interest in anime was due to the release of My Hero Academia.

Many years ago, anime was still considered a niche series from Japan. But over time they also became very popular in the West. Animes like “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece” are on everyone’s lips these days.

There are several factors that may have sparked a boom in the anime sector. But the CEO of Toho, a Japanese film and theater production company, seems to see the reason for this in a certain shonen anime.

My Hero Academia is said to have made anime accessible worldwide

The Toho animation company was founded about 11 years ago. In the early days things didn't go well, but with the release of “My Hero Academia” everything was said to have changed.

Suddenly, foreign sales companies were visiting Toho's CEO, Hiroyasu Matsuoka, almost daily. They all wanted to win the distribution of “My Hero Academia”. At that moment, the CEO realized what great potential there was in MHA, because the license price rose to unimagined heights:

As a result, we realized the potential for success of anime abroad and began to focus on expanding abroad. Of course, we had to respond to the domestic market, but we didn't want to miss out on the rapidly growing anime boom while thinking about how to distribute the anime series abroad.

This led to many more anime series being produced. So My Hero Academia paved the way for several other series that Toho Animation was involved with. These include:

  • “Jujutsu Kaisen”
  • “Freeze”
  • “The Pharmacist’s Diaries”
  • “Spy X Family”
  • “Haikyuu!!”

Toho Animation will continue to play an important role in the production of new anime in the coming years. Her current series “Kaiju No. 8” can be seen on Crunchyroll, for example.

And things are also looking good for MHA: The 7th season of the anime is scheduled to premiere on May 4, 2024 Crunchyroll start.
