Amazon Prime Video offers lower quality programs to non-paying subscribers

Since the beginning of 2024, Amazon Prime Video has broadcast advertising in the middle of its programs in the United States. They can be deleted with a paid option… which is also mandatory to benefit from the best viewing quality. For the moment, France is not concerned.

Since January 29, some markets have access to a version of Amazon Prime Video with advertisements. For the multinational, this makes it possible to charge an additional cost to those who do not want it – like Disney+ and Netflix. And imagine that this more expensive formula also allows you to benefit from the best viewing quality, as reported by The Verge in an article published on February 13.

German site 4KFilme discovered that several of their televisions offered some content in HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1, whereas they were previously in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. A mistake ? No, confirms an Amazon spokesperson: “ Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are only available for the ad-free option, on certain titles. » In other words, like Netflix and Disney+, Amazon is charging for quality. And it's really a shame.

Want Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on Prime Video? It will be a few euros more

Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos only concern a handful of titles on Amazon Prime Video. But exclusive productions from the SVOD platform are generally compatible, such as Reacher, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, Saltburn… Dolby Vision (an HDR format for a more dynamic visual rendering) and Dolby Atmos (a sound format which guarantees 3D effects throughout the room) reinforce immersion and allow films and series to be better highlighted (especially if you have good equipment).

In the very competitive SVOD market, price increases are unfortunately very common. We thought that Amazon Prime Video, which is just a bonus of the Prime subscription, would escape this, but Amazon wants to get its share of the advertising revenue pie (like TF1, which launched TF1+ for that). Note, however, that 4K UHD, HDR10 and Dolby Digital in 5.1 remain the bare minimum for the basic formula.
