Asterix is ​​a business that has been going on since 1959: first in comic strips of course, then in the cinema with cartoons and films, the first of which by Claude Zidi dates from 1999. Since then, multiple sequels have seen the day: the legendary Mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat in 2002 (the best and unbeatable, from a critical and commercial point of view), Asterix at the Olympic Games in 2008, Asterix and Obelix In the service of his Majesty in 2012… then the episode The Middle Kingdom in 2023.

The latter attracted a lot of attention: signed Guillaume Canet, who also plays the title role alongside Gilles Lellouche as Obélix, the film boasted in particular of having an absolutely staggering cast with countless national stars… and even international (Zlatan Ibrahimović, for example). The budget was also massive with 66 million euros on the clock, making it the sixth most expensive French film in history.

The problem is that this French blockbuster was received lukewarmly by critics. The press gives it an average of 2.5 out of 5 on Allociné and above all, it accumulates a little more than 46 million euros at the worldwide box office, which is not enough to make the investment profitable. It nonetheless remains the biggest success of the year in the country for a French production, with 4.6 million tickets sold.

It's go again

Success or not, Canal+ firmly believes in licensing: we have just learned the start of work on a brand new live-action film by the subsidiary StudioCanal. The latter has also designed a unique label called “StudioCanal Stories”, a branch specially designed for adaptations of literary works. This next Asterix feature film will thus serve to “inaugurate in style” this precise entityannounces the boss of the Canal+ group Maxime Saada.

On the other hand, we don't know much else: neither who will direct it, nor who played Asterix or Obelix. Patience is therefore essential and we will recall in passing that an animated series adapted from Asterix Le Combat des chefs is planned under the direction… of Alain Chabat. Enough to arouse the curiosity of many Gaulish fans.
