After the success of Baldur's Gate 3: Hasbro talks about role-playing sequel

The developers of Larian said goodbye to the role-playing game series after “Baldur's Gate 3”. The owner of “Dungeons & Dragons”, Hasbro, is still insisting on a sequel.

To fans' dismay, Swen Vincke, founder and boss of Belgian developer Larian, stated, not an expansion or a sequel to the immensely successful “Baldur's Gate 3”. “We have done our work,” said Vincke. “It's a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. So let’s pass the torch to another studio that will carry on this incredible legacy.”

The owner of Wizards of the Coast and thus also the “Dungeons & Dragons” brand, Hasbro is already thinking about a continuation of the “Baldur's Gate” series. The company says it is currently exploring the situation and is talking to partners.

“We hope it doesn’t take another 25 years.”

With those behind BAFTA Awards, where “Baldur's Gate 3” won again, the colleagues at PC Gamer spoke to Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. The company is already thinking about another part of the role-playing game series and is taking seriously the question of how the franchise could continue.

“We are currently talking to and being approached by many partners who are taking on the challenge of what the future of the Baldur's Gate franchise might look like,” said Evans. “We certainly hope that it won't take another 25 years, as was the case with Baldur's Gate 2 to 3, before we can answer this question.”

Fans can't let go of beloved characters yet

Hasbro wants to take the time to choose the right partner and approach for the sequel, says Evans. “We take this very, very seriously, as we do with all decisions related to our portfolio. We don’t rush decisions about who to work with on products or which products to consider.”

In addition to the continuation of the “Baldur's Gate” series itself, fans are also interested in what happens to the popular characters “Baldur’s Gate 3” go on. Swen Vincke confirmed that these are now owned by Wizards of the Coast and are essentially part of the official “D&D” canon. “I think it's too early to comment on specifics, and it's a much bigger question as to how we'll approach Baldur's Gate in the future,” says Eugene Evans. “But I would like to think that all of these characters could potentially appear in future products, for the fans’ sake.”
