5 TV Shows to Binge After Watching Midsummer Night on Netflix

The discreet Norwegian series rose by surprise to the top of Netflix's top 10 with its short episodes and its dysfunctional family story. To continue your momentum, here are 5 other series to discover on the streaming platform: Home for Christmas, Quicksand, Bloodline, The Haunting of Hill House as well as Gilmore Girls.

Made popular (or not) by the horror film Midsommar, the summer solstice is celebrated with bonfires and flower wreaths in Scandinavian countries. This annual event is at the heart of the series Midsummer Nightwhich took Netflix subscribers by surprise by becoming one of the streaming platform's current successes.

But with only 5 30-minute episodes, this fiction is devoured (too) quickly. So what to see next Midsummer Night ?

Home for Christmas

At first glance, this Christmas series seems to have nothing in common with Midsummer Night, which rather shines under the summer sky. However, they share an important similarity: having been created by Per-Olav Sørensen, prolific author of Netflix series, The Playlist has Christmas Storm. In each of his productions, we find an intimate atmosphere, which allows the characters to reveal their secrets little by little.

In Home for Christmas, we meet Johanne, a bubbly thirty-something but who is crumbling under the social pressure to form a relationship. At the end of her nerves, she will decide to lie to those close to her, by announcing that the lucky one will even be present at Christmas. He therefore has 24 days left to find a suitable suitor. Modern and original, Home for Christmas moves away from formatted productions to offer an uninhibited heroine Fleabag. Rejoicing.

Quicksand : Nothing greater

The creator of Midsummer NightPer-Olav Sørensen, could perfectly fit the expression “two rooms, two atmospheres”, as its Netflix productions follow one another without resembling each other. Between the family reunion which turns into a disaster and the cuddly Christmas tales, there is Quicksand: Nothing Greatera teen thriller he directed.

Set in the suburbs of Stockholm, the series takes place nine months after a terrible shooting at a posh high school in the Swedish capital. Maja Norberg is then in the dock and all the details of her life are scrutinized to prove her guilt. Quicksand thus mixes an effective detective intrigue with a teen drama touching, all in just 6 episodes.

Bloodline

You liked discovering the family secrets of Midsummer Night ? Then you should love those of Bloodline, in a much darker atmosphere. We discover the extremely wealthy Rayburn siblings, owners of a famous hotel off the coast of Florida. But the union of this happy group will be shattered as Danny, the eldest son, returns with a bang, after several years away from the family home. His return will bring to the surface many stories buried in the past…

Led in particular by Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), the 3 seasons of Bloodline gradually evolved from a family drama to a fast-paced thriller, with flashforwards in a mess the better to lose us in the process. A lackluster, but addictive, family portrait. Be careful though: the series was unfortunately canceled by Netflix, leaving several questions unanswered.

The Haunting of Hill House

What if our family secrets turned into horrific curses? This is the whole principle of The Haunting of Hill Housewhich moves away from the sun Midsummer Night to immerse us in a much more funereal atmosphere. Created by the master of the genre, Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher), one of the best Netflix series centers on the Crain family, who have just moved into a new home in 1992. More than 20 years later, the children have become adults but still have vivid memories of this mansion possibly haunted…

Here, there is no gratuitous terror: everything has its source in our inner evils, delicately highlighted in this 10-episode adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel. We end in tears, but the journey is so beautiful that it is worth the effort.

Gilmore Girls

You can't stand families tearing each other apart like in Midsummer Night and you prefer the love of Care Bears ? SO Gilmore Girls will obviously always be there to cheer you up. A thousand miles from the sparkling summer solstice of the Norwegian series, this monument of American culture will instead take you to Stars Hollow, in autumn landscapes, alongside Lorelai and her teenage daughter Rory, whom she had at only 16 years old.

Broadcast in the early 2000s but still essential, the 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls are perfect for taking your mind off things in a cocoon of sweetness, to accompany your best cup of hot chocolate.
