With zombies and Napoleon in the Ferrari into outerspace

Anyone who normally likes to complain about the streaming offerings of the various portals will definitely be proven wrong this week. Netflix, WOW and Co have so many new products in their luggage that – if you have a subscription to several streaming providers – you will hardly be able to keep up. The new “The Walking Dead” sequel started on Monday “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live”, which fans of the mother series have been eagerly waiting for. Because: With “The Ones Who Live” Rick and Michonne return! The miniseries (Season 2 isn't completely off the table yet) picks up six years after Rick's rescue, when Michonne suddenly receives evidence that her loved one could still be alive. Now on MagentaTV.

A day later, Disney+ easily ruined the day for every streaming competitor: “Shogun” went one of the best new series of the year to the start. And that's not even an exaggeration. The miniseries, set in the Edo period, brings us a mix of historical drama and action that is brimming with epicness and honor. And the critics agree: “Shogun” will win big at the Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes in 2025!

Things are getting somewhat historic on Apple TV+ this week: While “The Fictional Adventures of Dick Turpin” explores the 18th century with a wink, it also celebrates “Napoleon” with Joaquin Phoenix Streaming premiere. Ridley Scott's monumental historical epic felt like it had only just been released in cinemas, but Apple produced the film. This means: Similar to “Killers of the Flower Moon”, Apple TV+ was allowed to freely decide when “Napoleon” appears as a subscription – which is of course outstanding for home cinema fans.

If you're generally more interested in watching films instead of bingeing series for hours on end, Prime Video and Netflix are the perfect choice for you this week. Prime Video, for example, is streaming Michael Mann's celebrated biopic “Ferrari” with Adam Driver exclusively – the film actually did not have a German theatrical release. Meanwhile, Netflix is into science fiction: With “Code 8 – Part II”, the streaming provider released a surprising sequel to Kickstarter hit of 2019, while Adam Sandler meets a friendly alien spider between delusion and reality in “Spaceman: A Short History of Bohemian Space Travel”. It's as twisted and spiritual as it sounds. The current Netflix film week is rounded off on Sunday by “Bullet Train”. The crazy action comedy with Brad Pitt as a contract killer was definitely one of the biggest surprises of 2023 – now also available as a subscription.

Finally, some outstanding news from the “Lord of the Rings” front: Although Prime Video has just sent season 2 into post-production, Amazon’s streaming service is now very impatient. Good for the fans: Season 3 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is already underway officially in production. Whether this means that we have to accept less waiting time between Season 2 and Season 3 is unclear. One can still hope.
