Three weeks later, the Apple Watch is still struggling with the watchOS 10 weather bug.

I have a fairly high tolerance for software bugs. This occurs when using beta software for most of the summer. I don’t even mind when my iPhone tells me it hasn’t been turned on most of the night. Happens. However, this Apple Watch weather bug is really disappointing.

The problem is that the Apple Watch can’t reliably display Weather app data on the watch face. While we wait for the next watchOS update, a few temporary fixes have been made. However, even when they initially work, the clock returns to zero.

Before this bug, I was very excited about watchOS 10 and how it revamped the Weather app. watchOS 10 is the first version to let you set the humidity percentage on your watch face. The combination of temperature and humidity gives me a better idea of what it’s like outside.

That’s why this bug was such an annoying experience during the first three weeks of using watchOS 10. That, and the fact that the temperature display on the watch face is just as important to me as the time and date display. Now I have developed a habit of no longer using my watch to check the weather.

We noted the issue in September after it persisted from watchOS 10.0 to watchOS 10.0.1. It’s been 22 days since watchOS 10 was officially released. watchOS 10.0.1 remains the latest software, and the weather bug still hasn’t been fixed in Apple Watch.

Initially, clicking on the Weather app would launch the full version of the app and still display data. One factory reset on the first generation Apple Watch Ultra and it’s no longer the case for me.

My location permissions match my iPhone, but the Weather app on the watch doesn’t show my current location as a city option. Instead, these are empty complications for Cupertino and New York. So how’s the weather in New York? Not sure. The full Weather app on the watch also fails to return zero half the time.

Luckily, I have no issues with my iPhone running iOS 17. The hottest summer of my life has given way to more manageable weather conditions along the Gulf Coast.

And I’ll be the first to admit that Apple’s software has more pressing problems. Apple has solved the iPhone heating issue and is still working on releasing a major new feature for the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. But it’s also such a pain in the ass that the core Apple Watch feature is pretty ineffective.
