The Whims of the Gods is a new historical building game that brings a rare genre strength into focus

Building games have often been a largely lonely genre in the past. However, the tendency towards cooperative play is becoming ever greater. Anno 1800, for example, plays just as wonderfully in co-op as it does alone. Prison Architect also impresses with cooperative multiplayer and such a mode was recently revealed for Pioneers of Pagonia.

A completely new building game now wants to bring the two-player game into full focus. This is The Whims of the Gods, which is scheduled to go into early access in the third quarter of 2024.

The Whims of the Gods appears on Steam and is developed by PJ Games. A new studio founded in 2021 and based in Warsaw. The building game will be the first project of the still young studio.

Here we are transported to South American antiquity, where we build a metropolis out of the ground at the foot of a volcano. On the one hand, this works in a typical way in which we create resources, meet needs and develop new production systems. But on the other hand, the game was created with co-op in mind right from the start.

So you can build your settlement directly with a friend and concentrate on placing new buildings and managing commodity chains together. However, there should also be a decision-making mechanism that defines more precisely who can take on which task in the city.

However, the description also makes it sound as if it is also conceivable that you could get into trouble with your ally.

That's what else is in the game

Aside from the classic structure and the co-op component, there are a few other special features in The Whims of the Gods:

• The fights: There may be enemies coming out of the volcano that need to be defeated in automatic battles. You can influence the fights with special abilities.
• The volcano: The volcano can erupt at any time and destroy your city. You must pacify the gods to delay this moment.
• The calendar: The game is inspired by Mayan culture and features its own version of the Mayan calendar. The calendar can predict upcoming events, such as bountiful harvests, epidemics or natural disasters.
