29 years ago, a real milestone in gaming history saw the light of day. We're talking about Doom, the founder of the FPS genre. Only recently, a speedrun record that was previously considered unsurpassable was broken in the shooter.

As Speedruns are true masterpieces that resemble a virtual extreme sport. In these record attempts, the players have to demonstrate a high level of skill, quick reflexes, a lot of patience and even in-depth programming knowledge in order to be able to play through a game or individual levels in the shortest possible time.

That in 1993 by id software published Doom is still considered one of the most sought-after platforms for impressive gaming masterpieces. This shooter still represents a real challenge for many gamers, because after almost 30 years since Doom was released, it's not necessarily easy to set a new speedrun record thanks to the countless optimizations.

The recently broken record in Doom dates back a whopping 26 years and was previously considered unbeatable. Now an ambitious gamer has managed to set a new record in Doom. But how could the player beat the record after so long?

New record in Doom, the monarch of FPS games

Over the last few decades, Doom gamers have repeatedly tried to set new records. For example, challenge runs were about playing through the game without killing a single opponent. Also certain ones Doom level Speedrun is a coveted object for many record hunters.

In 1998, player Thomas Pilger managed to set a record for the first Doom level called “Entryway”. Pilgrim completed the level in just five seconds. To this day, this record was considered the ultimate and unbeatable. Mind you – until today!

The strategy behind the record is as follows: Immediately after starting, the player has to fire a single ball, which ideally lures all opponents in second gear to the right. If this is the case, the player can simply run past the mobs and straight to the exit door.

With a bit of luck, the opponent guarding the exit moves a little away from it and the gambler can also move past him. Thomas Pilger managed this process in five seconds and because it requires so few tricks and strategy, this record was previously considered unbeatable. There is a video of this speedrun here. But how could Pilger's record finally be beaten after so long?

The new speedrun record in the classic Doom

On April 6, 2024, the ambitious Doom player named 4ShockBlas entered the spotlight and rose to first place on the winner's podium. After 26 years, 4ShockBlas broke Thomas Pilger's record by completing the Entryway level in a whopping four seconds. The result of two decades of research, repetition, optimization and perfection. If that isn't a masterpiece!
