The fans' word is so powerful that developers are giving in

Even a mega-hit can crash that quickly. Actually, everything looked as if nothing and no one could change the fact that the successful shooter Helldivers 2 would continue to swim on a huge wave of success. After all, the action game has already broken several records and made numerous headlines. This followed recently, out of the blue a crash that was as surprising as it was starkwhich was not without consequences.

What happened around Helldivers 2?

Developers Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony recently announced that Helldivers 2 now requires an active PSN accountto be able to be played. This not only applied to the PS5, but also to the PC version of the shooter. This measure was justified with the alleged better protection against griefing and abuse.

However, this decision was not well received by the fans at all. On the contrary: Within a few hours there were more than 100,000 negative reviews on Steam, a huge shitstorm was unleashed. Sony even felt compelled to release Helldivers 2 (buy now ) in numerous countries to be removed from the online shops' offerings.

A once celebrated game crashed mercilessly in a very short space of time. That's the same as the final end for the shooter – or is it?

How does Sony react to the shitstorm?

Sony and Developers Arrowhead Game Studios were apparently both surprised and overwhelmed by the sheer vehemence of the fan protests and initially did not comment. However, Sony has now published a statement via X (formerly Twitter) that may help to smooth things over a bit.

“Helldivers fans, we have heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 linking update. The May 6th update, which requires a connection between Steam and PlayStation Network accounts for new players and for already active players from May 30th will not be released. We are still in the process of learning what is best for PC players, your feedback is invaluable to us. Thank you for your continued support of Helldivers 2, we will continue to keep you informed about future plans Up to date.”

Accordingly has the shitstorm from the fans achieved its desired effect, Sony and the developers gave in to the enormous pressure from the community. The update with the heavily criticized account requirement for Helldivers 2 will not appear. Whether the planned feature in another form at a later date will still appear remains to be seen.
