Netflix is once again creating an event in its releases of the week with the addition of this new film. A feature film that takes the challenge of once again adapting one of the cult licenses of your childhood.
In the Netflix releases from April 22 to 28, 2024, we find classics of French cinema with three Fantomas films and the new fantasy series Dead Boy Detectives. An original television show from Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) with Greg Berlanti (You) producing and Neil Gaiman (Sandman) writing. This is clearly one of the biggest news of the week. But that's nothing compared to a new event film available for a few hours on the platform.

We made a first update on the new Netflix releases for May 2024, but the month of April is not yet completely over. Additions will still arrive until the end of the week, and in a few days, the new French series Fiasco will strengthen the catalog. But this Thursday, April 25, 2024, the firm with the red N brought back a cult license from your childhood: Nicky Larson. This is not the surprise return of the animated series City Hunter, but a live-action film created for Netflix. Directed by Yuichi Sato (Strawberry Nights, The End of the Tiny World) with Ryohei Suzuki as Nicky Larson and Misato Morita as Laura Marconi.
A success for Netflix? The opinions are still few, but it already seems to divide between the impressions of spectators and the press. “It’s exactly what a live-action City Hunter movie should be. A perfect cast, breathtaking action, big laughs and a lot of heart. I couldn't be happier. The fans will be over the moon” says Victor D via Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, certain aspects of the new Nicky Larson Netflix film seem to have been much more disturbing. “It's not for me, but it might be for you if you like random, stupid, sexist entertainment until it bleeds.” believes Peter Martin of ScreenAnarchy.
Nicky Larson returns with a live-action feature film
The question of Nicky Larson's sexism was inevitably going to be addressed by certain critics. However, in an interview with AFP, Tsukasa Hojo, the original creator of the manga, assured that he had taken into account the evolution of our world on certain subjects for this Netflix production. “We established a rule that (the hero, Editor’s note), in our version, would not touch someone’s body without their consent” said the mangaka (via TV5 World). In the same way, according to him, there are no longer any jokes regarding the sexuality of certain characters. Finally, one of the other notable changes is the fact that Laura is now “stronger and independent”. The good news is that the Netflix feature film is visibly more faithful to the original City Hunter material.
